It came up in a class the wife and I just took at Durham’s incredible Night School Bar that Durham and Chapel HIll are not in the same metropolitan area as Raleigh. That’s funny to me, a person who can stand in my cousin’s backyard in Raleigh, walk out the back gate and be in Durham. But you can’t fight … Metropolitan Area Hall.
Why am I telling you this? Because I’m playing in Chapel Hill and Raleigh a week apart, which breaks the Rules of Smart Music Marketing, which warn against playing in the same area too often lest you divide your potential audience.
But those rules don’t apply if you consider that Chapel Hill and Raleigh are in different metropolitan areas. Also if you don’t care about the Rules of Smart Music Marketing, which I don’t. I don’t even care about the Rules of Dumb Music Marketing. I just want to see you at a show. Come on out! There’s two chances.
Plus a radio show. Oh dang I shouldn’t have mentioned that.
* This seems like a good place for a footnote. Or if it’s in the middle of the text is it a beltnote? Anyway, “The OAT” in the subheadline up there stands for The Oldest Adolescent in the Triangle, which we now know means two metropolitan areas. At least two. Maybe more. It was a short class.

Regular New Sledder readers will remember that Danny Grewen played trombone and arranged the horns on The Ballad of Pnut & Salty on my latest EP, True Stories of Time Travel available at Bandcamp and Subvert and-your-favorite-streaming-services-I-won’t-judge. David Prather is a singer-songwriter who played his first gig in 1959 in Texas and friends, he has stories. They play as a duo.
Danny Sandlot is a singer-songwriter who plays in the band Heavy Denim and I know that’s two Dannys which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice, right?
The following Wednesday, June 17, I’ll be at Slim’s Dive Bar in Raleigh, THE GREATEST DIVE BAR IN THE WHOLE METROPOLITAN AREA!
I made a different flyer after this because I didn’t like this one that much. You’ll see the other one on social media soon, but I did put 10 minutes into this one and the guy was rocking the same facial hair as me, minus the sideburns, like 150 years before me, so I wanted to use it. Also I’m not sure we moderns are giving appropriate shrift to the short-sleeve-sweater look. This is a police mug shot btw.
J Candeed is another one-man band, a trend in my fellow show be-onners lately. That is when he’s not leading his own band or playing in like 57 other bands around town. Towns, I should say. Metropolitan areas. He plays mandola and drums at the same time and sings, and also the drums are a suitcase. I’m not explaining it well he’s really good.
Jason Bales is a singer-songwriter even when he’s leading the band The Yardarm, though on this night he’ll just be Jason Bales with, as far as I know, no other musicians or parts of boats. A thing about Jason: Like J he is also really good at the singing and the songwriting and the doing cover songs.

The King Teen Radio Tour 2026, Second Leg
I’ll be making a return appearance on WHUP’s weekly Pass the Hat show, or as they say it on the radio, Whuppass the Hat, which I first visited last summer. I get to talk to the hosts and sing some songs for an hour, and then for a half hour I get to play guest DJ while they play some songs I’ve picked. Maybe I’ll play your favorite song. Or depending who you are, your song!
